Research
Two students enrolled in a Victorian Literature class taught by Prof. Allen Grove unearthed a travel manuscript by an anonymous Englishman touring South Africa a century ago. The manuscript, found in the Howells/Frechette Collection in Herrick Library, provides a quirky and colorful glimpse into Victorian attitudes toward travel, leisure, letters, religion, race and imperialism. The students, Courtney Ashraf and Levi Bridges, received an Alfred Research Grant for Undergraduate Students (ARGUS) grant   to publish this previously unknown manuscript in both paperback and hardcover format.

Emily Pimpinella, May 2005 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Alfred University, co-authored a paper which Psychology Professor Robert Maiden presented at a Gerontological Society of America meeting and at an Association for Gerontology in Higher Education meeting.

Some of Dr. Michele Hluchy's Environmental Studies students gain some real-life experience in the Adirondacks through a National Science Foundation grant that if funding a project designed to measure the effectiveness of the Clean Air Act in preventing acid rain.

Regardless of their majors, students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are all encouraged... and some are required... to complete an undergraduate research project. We think it's a great opportunity for them to showcase what they've learned at Alfred, to apply what they've learned in the classrooms and labs.

Some students receive stipends to cover costs associated with their projects through ARGUS or the Center for Environmental and Energy Research programs.

All are encouraged to present their projects at the annual Undergraduate Research Forum at the end of each spring semester.

Research experience is one more reason why employers and graduate schools alike say they find Alfred University students well-prepared for whatever they choose to do with their AU degrees.
