Psi Chi

Alfred University has held a chapter of the national honor society in psychology since 1964. The purpose of Psi Chi is to "encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship, and to advance the science of psychology" [National Organization]. Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate psychology students who meet the minimum qualifications:

1. Junior class standing or above.
2. Declaration of major or minor in psychology.
3. GPA of 3.3 or higher in at least 12 credit hours of courses taken at AU across three semesters.
4. GPA of 3.1 or higher within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Psi Chi Activities:

The Psi Chi Chapter has been involved in the following activities in recent years:

a. Psychology Round Table Series
Psi Chi invites speakers from across the university to discuss a topic of personal interest to the speaker (often their own research) that relates to psychology. Round Tables typically occur at least once a month during the Fall and Spring semesters. Recent talks have covered topics such as:

"Do you believe in magic? The psychology of superstition" -Dr. Nancy Furlong
"I will always remember...(or will you?)" -Dr. Leslie Taylor
"Is Freud dead?" -Dr. Gordon Atlas
"Views on euthanasia" -Dr. Gail Walker
"Cognition and animals" -Dr. Bill Dibrell

b. "Getting into Graduate School"
AU faculty and Career Development Center representatives discuss the process of considering and applying to graduate programs related to psychology as well as expectations for "life as a grad student". This event generally occurs early in the Fall semester.

c. Field Trips
Periodically Psi Chi and the Psychology Club attend guest lectures and colloquia at other universities (e.g. Cornell University, Saint Bonaventure University).
