Psychology : Gerontology Major

Alfred University Gerontology Student and SeniorsThe student majoring in Gerontology studies psychological, social, political, and biological aspects of aging. The major also provides for the application of classroom knowledge to real-life situations through a supervised internship.

Major Requirements

Students must complete all of the following:

  • GERO118 Introduction to Adult Development & Aging
  • BIOL 119 Physiology of Aging
  • PSYC 210 Communication & Counseling Skills
  • SOCI 348 Sociology of Families
  • PSYC 371 Psychology of Death & Dying
  • GERO 429 Cognition & Aging
  • GERO 485 Gerontology Internship

Students must complete one course from each of the following groups:

  • PSYC 220 Psychological Methods & Statistics
  • SOCI 230 Introduction to Data Analysis & Statistics
  • SOCI 253 Social Welfare Institutions
  • POLS 355 Public Policy
  • PSYC 322 Health Psychology
  • GERO 300 Special Topics in Gerontology
  • GERO 450 Independent Study
  • GERO 497 Senior Seminar in Gerontology
  • SOCI 470 Field Work
