Modern Languages : Major : Spanish
Our Spanish major and minor provide students from a variety of backgrounds with an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, an appreciation of foreign cultures, and advanced language skills. Spanish majors at Alfred acquire basic knowledge by taking core requirement courses in three areas: Spanish language, Latin American and Spanish cultures, and Latin American and Spanish literatures. Beyond this core, students are offered a series of elective courses allowing them to expand their knowledge in all three areas or to specialize in one.

Every third year, the Language House becomes the Spanish House, and students have an opportunity to live together with a native speaker of Spanish and with members of Poder Latin. All Spanish majors are highly encouraged to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country for at least one semester and to take the faculty-led Global Perspectives course to Spain or Costa Rica.

Spanish students have often combined their studies with a second major, such as Environmental Studies, Ceramic Engineering, Psychology, Global Studies or another foreign language. Our Spanish program also provides a sound foundation for those students wishing to pursue a graduate degree in Spanish.
