Bringing
the world to our community
Students at Alfred University have the option
of living in the Language House, located at 12
Park Street. The Language House creates an immersion
experience for its residents. Alfred students in
language courses have the opportunity to live with
an international Teaching Assistant and other language
students. Our international Teaching Assistant
fosters an authentic cultural and linguistic experience
for students in the language program. Before, after
or in lieu of a study abroad experience, living
in the Language House opens/provides a space to
develop your fluency. The Language House also hosts
a variety of events in other languages: foreign
films, discussion groups, dinners, games, lectures...
Every year the House represents one of the languages
taught in the Division of Modern Languages. In
2005-2006, the Language House is German-speaking
with a resident Fulbright Teaching Assistant from
Austria, Angelika Tsaros. Angie is finishing her
Masters in American Studies with a specialization
in queer studies at Karl-Franzens University in
Graz, Austria. She speaks English like an American
(though never in the Language House of course!)
and has studied both Russian and Spanish. When
she returns to Austria, she plans to prepare a
PhD in order to be a university professor. Angie
loves literature, teaching Austrian Culture and
language at Alfred and traveling. She participates
actively in numerous Language House events, the
German Club and Spectrum. In the spring, Angie
will be teaching a Special Topics course on contemporary
Austrian culture entitled “No Kangoroos in Austria.”
