Global Awareness Roundtable
The Global Awareness Roundtable is a monthly event designed to introduce the Alfred community to a variety of cultures from around the world. This informal gathering gives our numerous international faculty, students and alumni the opportunity to introduce participants to countries as diverse as Japan, Guatemala and Tunisia. Students who have studied or worked abroad also share their experiences and observations. Presentations cover a wide range of topics including history, traditions, art, music and food.

La Table Ronde
The Table Ronde meets for an hour at noon once a month at the Language House. It is an opportunity for students, faculty and members of the community to speak French, to listen to guest speakers, play games and to discuss various topics in French (politics, science, art, economics etc.).

Trip to Quebec
Every spring, students have the opportunity to travel with Professor Robana to Quebec City and Montreal. In addition to practicing their French, students get to observe the daily lives of the Quebecois, taste their food, listen to their music, and share their opinions on a variety of contemporary issues. Students return to Alfred with a real appreciation for and a better understanding of the French Canadian life, history and culture.

French Club
The French Club is open to all students who are interested in French language and culture regardless of their level of proficiency. The purpose of the French Club is to foster a greater knowledge of French culture and language, to give students an opportunity to be involved with French culture and to speak in an informal environment outside of the classroom, to promote global awareness, to help integrate French speaking students into the Alfred community, and to take advantage of the many French related activities in the region. In recent years, for example, the French club went to Buffalo to see a performance of Ionesco's La Leçon and took a weekend trip to see an Art Nouveau exhibit at the National Gallery in Washington D.C. and an exhibit of Manet's still-life paintings at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

German Club
The Alfred University German Club is open to the public. Members include students, exchange students from Germany, university faculty and members from the community. The German Club has regular monthly gatherings. Events include dinners with a German or Austrian movie, celebrations of German holidays, game nights, conferences and excursions to nearby sites of interest. Non-German speakers are welcome. Our events are a chance to learn or practice your German and to learn about the cultures of German-speaking countries. Two major events sponsored by the German Club are the Oktoberfest, a fall celebration with food, games and polka dancing, and the Maypole Festival where students can dance around the Maypole and enjoy great food and music.

Japanese Contests
Students of Japanese may participate in an annual speech contest sponsored by Sharp Corporation. Awards include round-trip tickets to Japan and various Sharp products. All students receive a gift certificate for participating.

Students of Japanese may also participate in the "Brief Message from the Heart" contest in which contestants must write a letter of 25 or fewer words expressing their feelings about their hometown. 200 prizes are offered including a trip to Japan for the three top entries. Contest promoted by the Maruoka-Cho Cultural Foundation and sponsored by the Japan Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Sumitomo Group.

Montessori School
Students who enjoy working with children have the opportunity to spend time at the Montessori School located on the Alfred University campus introducing the children to foreign languages.
