General Studies
Interested in a variety of disciplines and don’t want to choose just one as a major? Don’t have a career goal requiring a specific major, such as teaching history? The General Studies (or Interdepartmental) Major is designed for students whose educational objectives can be met through a broad course of studies in the liberal arts and sciences. A traditional liberal arts education provides a broad base of knowledge and fosters the development of transferable intellectual skills including conceptual analysis, critical thinking, and disciplined writing. In turn, these skills form the foundation for creative problem-solving, ethical and moral reasoning, and strong leadership.

The General Studies (Interdepartmental) major requires students to complete 40 credit hours distributed across the six disciplines that are the foundation of the general education requirements for the Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences. These “Areas of Knowledge” include Literature, Philosophy and Religion, Art, History, Social Science, and Natural Science. (Upon completion of the General Studies major, students will have completed a total of 72 credits in these Areas of Knowledge, including at least 8 credits in each area.)

Simply, a liberal arts education prepares individuals to be successful in our ever-changing world, and the General Studies Major is liberal arts education at its traditional best.
