General Studies - Major

Broad-based coursework
General Studies is an interdepartmental major designed for students who are interested in a variety of disciplines and don't want to choose just one as a major. Students in this major are exposed to a broad course of study in the traditional liberal arts and sciences which fosters skills such as

  • Conceptual analysis
  • Critical thinking
  • Disciplined writing
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Ethical and moral reasoning
  • Strong leadership

Requirements
All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must complete 32 credits of General Education Requirements as follows: 4 credits each of Literature, Philosophy/Religion, Arts, and History, and 8 credits each of Social and Natural Sciences.

To complete a General Studies major, students must take 40 additional credits from the following list of disciplines. These 40 credits must include a minimum of 4 credits from each of these 6 areas of knowledge.

  • History
  • Social Science
  • Natural Science

Upon completion of the General Studies major, students will have earned a total of 72 credits in these areas of knowledge.
