Wakoh Shannon Hickey grew up in the Napa Valley of California. She attended college at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned a BA in political science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She worked as a journalist and editor in the San Francisco Bay Area, covering politics and law. She also taught writing, and taught people with disabilities to use voice-activated computer systems. Her graduate education began at the Pacific School of Religion, a member school of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. She earned an M.A. in Buddhist and Christian studies in 2001 and an M.Div. in 2003. She also trained as a hospital chaplain, and in 2003 was ordained as a priest of Soto Zen, which she has practiced since 1984. In 2008 she completed a Ph.D. in Religion and Modernity at Duke University. On breezy days she loves to fly stunt kites.
