| The Division of English offers two minors for students who wish to major in another discipline, but still want to explore either writing or literature.
Minor in Writing
The Minor in Writing gives students in any discipline the opportunity to study the art and practice of imaginative writing. This minor is ideal for students with an interest in writing poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and/or drama. The writing skills students develop in this minor help prepare them for successful careers in education, publishing, journalism, editing, and any profession with a writing component. In order to earn a Minor in Writing, a student must complete 8 credits at the 200 level, including The Language of Literary Art and one additional 200-level creative writing course. He or she must also complete at least 10 credits of upper-level creative writing courses.
Minor in Literature
The Minor in Literature gives students in any discipline the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills and their knowledge of a broad range of European and American literatures. This minor is ideal for students with a passion for literature. The analytical and writing skills developed in the minor help prepare students for success in law school, MBA programs, or careers in business or education. In order to earn a Minor in Literature, a student must complete 8 credits at the 200 level selected from the following courses: Language of Literary Art, Survey of British Literature, and Survey of American Literature. He or she must also complete at least 10 credits of upper-level literature courses.
