Students minoring in art education will be enrolled in the appropriate baccalaureate programs in either the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the School of Art and Design of the New York State College of Ceramics, in addition to completing the minor requirements of the Middle/Adolescence Education program. A student preparing to teach visual arts should consult a faculty member in the art education program before planning a program of major studies. Students may complete the appropriate course work in education to receive certification to teach visual arts.
Admission to the Minor
Students may apply for admission into the Middle/Adolescence/Special Subjects (PreK - 12 Visual Arts) program at the end of their sophomore year. To be admitted, students must
- Complete an Interdisciplinary Art or a Bachelor of Fine Arts major
- Have the recommendation of their major division
- Have a 2.75 grade point average
- Achieve a 3.0 grade point average in EDUC 230 and EDUC 231
- Take appropriate teacher examinations
Education Coursework
Candidates must complete the following sequence of professional education course requirements:
- Sophomore Year
- EDUC 230 - Psychological Foundation of Education (3 credits)
- DUC 231 - Social Foundations of Education (3 credits)
- Junior Year
- EDUC 405 - Literacy in the Content Areas (3 credits)
- EDUC 413 - Using Literature in the Middle/Adolescent Classroom
- SPED 456 - Human Development: Exceptionality
- Senior Year (2 or 3 semesters)
- EDUC 345 - Education Fieldwork (100hrs) (3 credits)
- EDUC 491 - Current Methods in the Teaching of Art (offered Spring only) (3 credits) (EDUC 489 - Current Teaching Methods: Adolescent Subjects may be substituted)
- EDUC 460 - Seminar in Teaching (3 credits)
- EDUC 463 - Student Teaching in Art Education (12 credits)
Certification
Students completing the program meet the academic requirements of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for certification in Visual Arts (PreK-12).
In order to meet the NYSED requirements for initial certification, teacher candidates must take the following three NYSTE examinations. Candidates must have taken all three in order to register for EDUC 463.
- Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
- Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written (ATS-W) Elementary or Secondary
- Content Specialty Test (CST) - Visual Arts
