The Critical Discourse Studies minor offers you an opportunity to become acquainted with some of the central theoretical debates taking place in the humanities and the social sciences. Except for the required core course (Intro. to CDS), all courses are regular courses in fields such as philosophy, history, literature, languages, psychology, anthropology, and communications that are cross-listed as CDS courses. They are broadly interdisciplinary and cover issues such as methodology, the nature of interpretation, and the role of reason, language, and values in the development of different perspectives. Special emphasis is paid to thinkers who have challenged the assumptions of modernism: for instance, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Burke, Foucault, Habermas, Derrida, Lyotard, and Kristeva.
