| Communication Studies is a broad program that may include journalism, speech, film, television, advertising, public relations, popular music, and new media. The program at Alfred University stresses common principles that tie each to the others. Rather than teach technical skills that inevitably become outdated, we teach fundamental skills - critical thinking, effective writing, dynamic speaking, creative problem solving, and sound teamwork - that allow our graduates to thrive in a rapidly changing media world.
The program provides a solid grounding in the economic structures that shape contemporary media industries, which enables students to predict where the industries are headed in the future.
As a supplement to their classroom work, students are encouraged to work with WALF, the University's FM radio station; AUTV, the on-campus television station; and Fiat Lux, the student newspaper, as well as to complete an off-campus internship with a communications industry organization.
Ultimately, then, at Alfred University we strive to help our students not only find their first jobs, but also to pursue rewarding careers as leaders in the exciting field of Communication Studies. |
