A firm foundation
Alfred University's Communication Studies program stresses fundamental skills that allow our graduates to thrive in a rapidly changing media world:

  • Critical thinking
  • Effective writing
  • Dynamic speaking
  • Creative problem solving
  • Sound teamwork

Emphasis is placed on individual attention, curricular flexibility, and intellectual challenges. The program also provides a solid grounding in the economic structures that shape contemporary media industries.

Find your niche
Communication Studies is a broad program that may include journalism, speech, film, television, advertising, public relations, popular music, and new media; but it is also a place for those who wish to develop an awareness of general communication principles applicable to many other careers.

Hands-on experience
As a supplement to their classroom work, students are encouraged to work with WALF, the University's FM radio station; AUTV, the on-campus television station; and Fiat Lux, the student newspaper, as well as to complete an off-campus internship with a communications industry organization.

Successful graduates
Alfred's Communication Studies program provides a solid foundation for graduate study in communications and related disciplines including law, business, and the social sciences. Lean more about careers in communications.
