Biology : Events, Lectures & Clubs
As a Biology student you’ll have the opportunity to participate in events designed to further your educational goals while providing assistance to the community and to individuals who are considering a career in the biology industry.

American Red Cross Blood Drives
On four dates during the academic year, Biology students in FYE classes and in Biology Club will volunteer at on-campus blood drives for the American Red Cross. Students assist by promoting donation among their peers, by registering volunteers as they arrive at the drive, and by staffing the canteen for donors.

48-Hour Challenge
The 48-Hour Challenge is a game for teams of high schools students and their advisors. Clues are posted to the 48-Hour Challenge website, and teams must use scientific logic and reasoning to figure out the problem. Teams prepare at their home schools, and then travel to Alfred for 48 hours of fun in the labs where they are able to conduct experiments in order to solve the problem! As an Alfred Biology student, you’ll help our faculty assist the high school students in the biology labs while they are on campus.

Alpha Helix Biology Club
This academic/social group is for students interested in biology, regardless of major. The club organizes field trips and other out-of-class learning activities that enhance understanding and curiosity in the biological and health sciences. Members assist the community and campus by sponsoring blood and organ donation drives as well as providing tutoring to other students in biology classes.

Lectures
Our alumni and other invited guests are the stars of our annual series of insightful, motivating, thought-provoking lectures on contemporary research practices and professional employment and growth opportunities within the biological and health sciences. You may even have the opportunity to work with the speakers in small classes and visit with them socially.

Here’s what we have planned this year just for you:
The JoAnn Miller Memorial Lecture on Ethical Issues in Medicine brings nationally-known ethicists to AU to discuss current ethical issues of potential interest to students, faculty, and society. This is especially valuable to students considering health professions.

The H.O. Burdick Memorial Lecture in Biology features speakers on a variety of biology-related topics.

The Sigma Xi Lecture is an annual event sponsored by the Alfred University chapter of Sigma Xi. Lecturers come from all over the US to present lectures in their specific fields. Topics for the lectures vary from year to year and range from evolutionary biology, forensic anthropology, public health and policy, tissue engineering, and everything in between.

The Biology Junior Seminar and Senior Seminar allow students to present their own independent research and ARGUS projects. Additionally, speakers are brought in each year to present ongoing research and to discuss career opportunities with students.
